~~ AGM INCOMING CAPTAIN’S ADDRESS
Mr Chairman, President, Captains and lady captains , ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for the welcome. This has taken some time coming for me though I must admit that the time since I knew I was going to be captain has gone so quickly that is apart from the last 40mins or so sitting in that chair!
I have been a member here at BPGC for the last 22 years and never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be standing here today as your new captain. It is a great privilege and honour for me and I’m really looking forward to my year during which I hope to meet up with and play golf with as many different members as possible. Naturally as you all can imagine I have had plenty of offers of advice and help which is much appreciated. We are lucky here at BPGC to have so many past captains with a large fountain of knowledge which I can assure you ladies and gents I shall tap when necessary. All you have to do is to look round this room and what do you see – a plethora of green jackets! Good job I’m not colour blind!
Thank you Dave for asking me to be your Vice Captain. It has been a great year working with you and what a year you have had! Congratulations on raising a fantastic amount for your charity. A record I think down to the generosity of all members but mostly down to all the hard work and effort which you have put into it yourself. It has been a fabulous year all round and I’ve got a lot to follow. Thank you for all your help in getting me prepared for my year and for your advice which was to do it in my own way and enjoy it and that ladies and gents is exactly what I am going to do. Dave I have two presentations here for you :- Firstly this is a photograph album of your year which I hope you enjoy.I hope I haven’t missed anything memorable out. My thanks to Terry Denby and Stuart Shurman for their assistance in helping me compile this. Secondly I like to present this gift from the committee.
I am looking forward to working with the new committee. Actually it’s not a lot different from last year! Firstly of course we have John Urban in his new role as Vice Captain. Then a very warm welcome to our new member John Tugwell It’s good to have you on board John and I hope you enjoy it.. We have one member retiring this year past captain Paul Woollard. On behalf of all of us Paul many thanks for all your hard work and excellent contribution to the committee over the last 4 years.
Now my charity for 2018. I am sure it is not a surprise to anyone that I have chosen a medical one. It is Prostate Cancer UK. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men .It is uncommon under the age of 55. What else is uncommon under the age of 55? Golf Club members! One in eight men will be diagnosed with this disease and sadly about 11,000 men will die from it each year in the UK. Now no more gloomy facts. Things are getting better . There is an immense amount of research being carried out into early diagnosis and the treatment of the condition. I’m sure you are aware of this as not a month goes by without a major feature being written in one of the National papers detailing some new findings. Prostate Cancer UK is at the forefront of funding these cutting edge research projects as well as providing support services to patients and their families through specialised nurses and via a helpline and the internet. I am sure that like myself we all here perhaps have a relative or a friend who is now or has suffered from this condition in the past and I hope you all agree this is a very relevant charity for us. I know I can depend on the generosity of Badgemore members and appreciate your support.
I am very much looking forward to working with Lady Captain Carol this year. She has an excellent charity Medical Detection dogs. We have decided to jointly raise funds for our charities at most events during the year except our respective Captain’s Days. This will include the Open Anniversary Beat the Pro and the Longest Day Challenge which I am not attempting on my own this year having seen the state of Capt Haddock in 2017. We are going to have a relay of golfers . I already have 2 volunteers plus myself so look out you might get roped in for playing as well as sponsoring. In addition we are running Captain/ Lady Captain matches so are looking for plenty of challenges from mixed pairs from March onwards. The charity bunker will continue and we are looking at a nearest the pin ( 50% to winner 50% charity) at the weekends in the summer. More details when finalised.
One other new feature this year is that I have arranged a Captain’s Away Day. This will be on Friday June 15th at Sonning Golf club. It is a mixed event open to all members followed by a simple lunch . This is a fun day, it is not a fundraiser. There will be a 2 tee start and I am looking for an entry of around 50 players. I hope you will all support it more details nearer the time. Finally my away trip Captain’s Tour. The dates are Tuesday September 11th to Thursday September 13th. We are going to Wiltshire , staying at Bowood Hotel playing Bowood golf course twice and the nearby Manor House once. The tour has a name . I’m not aware of it at present but I believe Vice John will announce it tomorrow. I dread to think what it might be ! I will be sending out all details later in the month. I have a booking for 40 with increased capacity if necessary .
Ladies and gentlemen thank you very much and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at my Drive In tomorrow. David Weston.
