March 2020
The team have taken advantage of a decent spell of weather (34mm of rain only) and a very quiet spell (like no other!) to crack on with some essential tasks to ensure your beautiful golf course is in fantastic condition for when you all return.
Liquid feed with added iron has been applied to greens in recent days helping to thicken up the sward and improve colour. The sward is tight and in good shape with very little damage from winter wear. Height of cut is remaining at 6mm.
Ocmis have been on site recently to spring commission the irrigation system. We have started applying irrigation regularly mainly during the day allowing us to test the system thoroughly. A few rogue sprinklers have been repaired.
We have just sprayed a light liquid feed and herbicide to fairways in recent days. This will help provide enough nutrients as we head into the summer and control invasive weeds. Height of cut remains at 16mm.
Reducing thatch (ORGANIC MATTER) build up in the top 50mm profile is still the priority this coming season which will require more aeration and scarification to be carried out on the greens. We are verti-cutting greens on a weekly basis (light scarification). Each time we are removing lots of organic matter.
Verti-draining fairways will be completed this coming week.
Course furniture refurbishment has gathered pace during lockdown with signage, ball washers etc. all being refreshed before the course re-opens.
Tom Stocker has returned to the team after a short stint away and, during this difficult period, we have drafted Matt from the bar to help out for a period on the course.
Course Improvements
Frank Lovell has commenced construction of the new practice facility behind the 9th green. As always it did not take him long to turn an ugly pile of soil into a stunning area to work on your short game. At the end of week one, the base area has been roughly shaped with proposed bunkers in place. As part of the project, 2 new practice nets will be installed beside the existing ones. In addition to this, Frank will be back-filling fairway bunkers at the 1st and 5th.
New Greens Update
Greens at the 1st & 5th are coming along nicely as we head into Spring. We have just applied a granular feed to thicken the sward up. Irrigation applied more frequently than old greens because of construction so we have to monitor moisture levels closely. Height of cut is at 6mm, the same as the old greens. We will be applying several topdressings in the coming weeks.
Look forward to you all coming back soon hopefully.
Stay safe!
